Nor-Cal Precision
I'm from northwest Ohio and have shot a few groundhogs over the years at ranges out to around 350 yards with a 22-250 factory rifle, however, I've always wanted to go out west and try at the long ranges that just aren't possible in my area. Five of us booked a trip to the Rosebud in South Dakota.
I knew that if I wanted to have a good chance at the 1000 yard club I would need a new rifle, so the search began. I read countless magazine and spent enough time researching on the web to justify a divorce for most wives, all in search of the ultimate long range varmint rig. After getting the list of prospective gun smiths down to 3, I called each one before making the final decision.
I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Jerry Rice and knew I found the right guy.
Jerry gave me advice on every detail including caliber, barrel, stock, trigger, scope, rings, bases and even the recommended load for my 6X284 right down to the bullet seating depth!
I talked to Jerry several times while he was building my rifle and learned more about long range shooting than I could have read about in a lifetime. Jerry's advice is based on field use not theory. The day my rifle arrived, I felt like a 10 year old the just got a Red Ryder for Christmas. My first day at the range, with the starting loads Jerry recommended I shot in the .3's and ended up in the .2's with the final load. That might not sound that impressive to a professional benchrest shooter, but until I bought this rifle I had never shot from a mechanical rest before. Trust me, the rifle can shoot better than I can.
I could not wait to get to South Dakota.
We schedule a three day trip in hopes of getting two days of good weather. The first day we got rained out in the morning but went back out around noon, it was overcast with 15-25mph wind. I had the wind in my face and took my first shot at about 400 yards, surprisingly I was only about 1/2 minute low of my drop chart, (he was dead on the second shot). It took 4 shots to kill the next one at 690 yards, I was feeling very confident and could not believe how consistent it was shooting in that wind, if I adjusted 1 minute my impact point change 1 minute. I told by spotter to find me something at 1000+ and he found 2 right next to each other at 1100.
The first shot was low but after adjusting it looked like every shot was hitting the mark, it's hard to see an 8" p-dog in detail at 1100 yards, but it looked like I killed him. We jumped in the truck to go see and sure enough his head was gone and he was quite dead, I had gotten into the 1000 yard club my first day! It's a good thing because I never got to shoot on day 2 and day 3 because of the rain.
At any rate, if your asking for an endorsement for Nor-Cal Precision, you've got one. I wanted the best varmint rifle at any cost, (by the way Nor-Cal was the least expensive of my top three considered) and what I got in my opinion was just that,PLUS the knowledge to actually use it. I recommend Jerry Rice without hesitation to anyone, period.
