I began my quest for a "Rice-Gun" after having a conversation w/ Mike Miller of Tactical Intervention Specialists after my first "Mudville Match".(**) I was shooting my M1A (M21 clone) at the time. It was a rainy and windy day (typical Mudvile conditions), and I was envying the simplicity of the bolt guns over the potential for malfunction of my gas-gun. (Although it never even stuttered after being bathed in rain and the fine flaky gravel on the firing lines.)

So with the help of a pre-existing second job and some e-mails, I delivered to Jerry a LA M700 Synthetic in 30-06. My opting for the long-action comes from already having the action in case I wanted to go to a longer cartridge someday.

I met Jerry and his wonderful wife, Muriel, at his home. Jerry flooded my senses with some products of his workmanship along with a couple of Schmidt und Bender scopes thrown in. (I figure he wanted me to see what "real" glass looked like, because at the time I had a Tasco SS 10X42 attached to the LA... But my Loopy 3.5X10 M3 LR was on my m1a back home.)

Click for larger imageHe talked me out of the powder-coat, but talked me into fluting for the bbl. And a Ruger bolt stop. He is SO clever. So I ended up w/ a 308 L A M700 w/ a 26" #7 K&P SS Bbl, Tubb recoil lug, and Ruger bolt stop. Along w/ the necessary truing, lapping, machining, voo-doo, and incantations.

While I was awaiting the result from Jerry, I ordered a McMillan A3 w/ thumb-wheel adj. Cheek-piece and 3-way butt. Jerry Rice turned me onto the thumb-wheel. At the time McMillan didn't catalog it. Eventually w/ JR's advice and assistance it all came together in a two-step pillar-bedded manner and shoots sub moa all day long. No matter how hot the bbl. It does not change zero with disassembly/reassembly.

I have also installed a set of Wichita sling swivels and a Tactical Intervention's sling by Mike Miller. I use a shortened Versa-Pod bipod and occasionally a Harris "M" model. I use the John Baier "Light-Force" 20 MOA 2-piece bases with a set of 30 mm Mk IV rings holding up a Loopy 3.5 X 10 M3 LR w/ mildot. At present it only has 383 rnds. down the pipe. All of them have been less than ¾ MOA. And my technique definitely isn't as good as when I was a young jarhead.

I truly think it performs better at Long Range than it does at 100 yds. I have surprised myself w/ 600 yd ½ moa groups at the two matches I have shot with it. I sometimes call it my "Laser Rifle".

Jerry's workmanship is simply superb. He is open to questions and tells you what he knows works. Value for the dollar is outstanding and his wait time is minimal compared to some of the other top name builders. This retired jarhead gives Nor-Cal Precision an "Outstanding" fitness report in all categories.
